JAGAS sandstone paving is worked from natural sandstone mined in Rajastan in Northern India. Rajasthan is rich in an enormous variety (and quantity) of stone, especially sandstone and limestone. Colours vary from muted to extravagant.
The Stone range of pavers is available in two finishes...
- Hand split sandstone pavers
- Sawn sandstone pavers
Natural sandstone paving is either sawn or split from quarried rock. The rock nearer the surface tends to be more homogeneous which suits sawn paving while deeper down there is the valuable cleft stone which can be hand split to produce a slightly uneven surface - with or without a lot of colour variation - which makes wonderful paving for gardens.
Sandstone is very strong and has low water absorption. Sawn sandstone can be supplied in a lesser thickness than concrete, typically 16-18 mm thick. With cleft sandstone, hand splitting is repeated until the thickness reduces to about 35 mm after which splitting is not viable.
Hand split stone paving
The paving is split repeatedly using hammer, chisel and wedges until the stone is about 35mm thick. The edges are then trimmed by hand to give an attractive but nonetheless straight grout line. It is traditional to lay this paving in a pattern made up of 4 or 5 different sizes.
The finish of the split paving has a gentle texture that gives interest without being too "rustic" for New Zealand tastes. There is a wide range of colours and sizes available, some of them maintained as stock items. Lead times for special orders are 5-6 weeks so can easily be accommodated in a building programme - paving is usually the very last component of a building.
Hand split sandstone paving offers natural beauty of colour and texture while being practical and durable. Being a natural product no two pieces are exactly the same bringing a unique look to a hard landscaping area. The natural practicality and durability makes hand split sandstone ideal for commercial and residential uses such as streetscapes, meandering paths through gardens, relaxing sitting areas and patio areas for entertaining.

Sealing...
Natural sandstone, particularly the sawn product, can stain and sealing is recommended.
We recommend sealing either before or after laying with a suitable penetrating sealer. Particularly when sealing after laying, the stone should first be cleaned with a stone cleaner. If grouting is to be done before sealing it is STRONGLY ADVISED that grout marks on the stone be wiped off IMMEDIATELY.
